Shane McCandless Quintet ‘Once In Step’ Album Release

The debut album of Shane McCandless, “Once In Step,” is a collection of original music focused on improvisation and rhythm, featuring interplay within the ensemble. The band consists of McCandless on saxophone, Dennis Baciuc (NYC) on trumpet, Sebastian Claas (Germany) on bass, Digba Ogunbiyi (Philadelphia) on piano, and Ryan Barski (Rochester, NY) on drums. Their collaboration began during their studies at the Eastman School of Music. The album will be available on all streaming platforms and available for purchase on Bandcamp. This project is supported by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts.

Shane is currently serving as a Lecturer of Music Performance at Ithaca College where he teaches saxophone and arranging in the jazz department. In 2023, his composition for big band, “On the Eastern Edge,” was a winner of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composer award. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s in music from University of Miami’s Frost School of Music and Eastman School of Music, respectively. He has performed at festivals and venues nationally including at the Groundup Music Festival, Sarasota Jazz Festival, Clearwater Jazz Festival, Rochester Jazz Festival, Elkhart Jazz Festival and the Jazz Kitchen.
